About

The Yoruba traditions have developed and matured for thousands of years, leaving a rich cultural history in its path. While many have moved into urban environments and away from their native lands, their traditions and beliefs are still alive. Yoruba religion is the basis for a number of religions in the New World, notably Santería, Umbanda, Trinidad Orisha, Haitian Vodou, and Candomblé. These religions started in Nigeria but were combined with Catholicism, by force, when the slave trades began.

In the native religion of the Yoruba people, Orishas are spirits sent by Olodumare ,"GOD",  for the guidance of all creation and of humanity. Most Orishas are said to have previously existed in the spirit world (òrún) and then become incarnated as human beings here on Earth. Others are said to be humans who are recognised as deities upon their death due to extraordinary feats accomplished in life. Here at Yoruba Designs, we recognize and honor those Orishas.
